There is no school on Friday due to it being Good Friday.

This week's spelling test will be on Thursday.  It will be on the list of words beginning with "light."  Your child will also be responsible for the words he or she missed on this past Friday's test.

Practice + and - facts

We are still learning new things and constantly reviewing what we've already learned.  I have started on assessments.

Reading and math groups end on April 25, but our work in the classroom continues until May 23rd.

We do need more snacks, please.

Your child is bringing home a list of the third one hundred Fry sight words. (These are the most frequently used words in reading and writing.  I've sent home the first two lists earlier in the year.)  We are going to use these as our spelling words for the next five weeks.  You'll see how the 100 words are divided up on the paper.  PLEASE KEEP THIS PAPER IN A SAFE PLACE SO YOU'LL HAVE IT FOR FIVE WEEKS. :)  The kids should already know how to spell most of these words, so they will have to really learn only a few each week.

The kids are going to write their words in cursive on a half sheet of handwriting paper.  This is not due until Thursday.

Next week is only a four day week since we do not come to school on Good Friday.

THERE IS AN IMPORTANT FIELD TRIP NOTE IN THE TAKE HOME FOLDER.  Please read it carefully, sign it, and return it tomorrow.  Once I've seen your signature, I'll send it back home for you to keep.

The next seven weeks are crammed packed full with lots of fun, extra things to do with the kids.  In addition to pretty weather, ball practice, dance recitals, and ALL the other things, the end of the school year is hard for everyone. We don't stop working until we're finished with everything.  Today we started on two brand new skills, and we still have several others to start on in the near future.  Plus we have to keep reviewing what we've already learned because that's assessed, too.  Please help me by talking to your child staying focused and responsible about their school work during these last few weeks.  I am sooooo proud of what we've accomplished so far this year.  I adore my Whiz Kids and want them to end the year being the best that they can be.

We will continue to have five minute timed tests on + and - through the first week in May.  I hope to have assessments finished by then, too, but that will depend on all the interruptions we have. :)

APRIL 17 is Mr. M's last day.  We'll say our farewells with a chocolate cookie cake, drinks, and handmade cards from the kids.

I DO NEED SNACKS!

Kids who are in Mrs. Jackie's math group need to be practicing on multiplication facts---just one set (like the 6s) at a time.  Please consider buying multiplication flash cards. :)

Study new spelling words tonight.  (There's a note in the folder to read.)

B list:  around, about, found, house, couch, frown, down, flower, growl, our, hour, sour, little, off

C list:  cloudy southwest, playground, houseboat, downstairs, sunflower, powerful, crowded, ourselves, our, hour, sour, little, off, eyebrow, allowance, empowered, flowered, countdown, scoured

NOTE: It is not uncommon for second graders to confuse the words "our" and "are."  I think it's due to OUR southern drawl.  "Our" is a possessive pronoun which means something belongs to us.  "Are" is a being verb.

We are finishing our first attempt at a class research project!  Last week we met with Mrs. Smith's class to learn about Abraham Lincoln from three different reference sources:  a Discovery Education video, a book, and a newspaper/magazine article from Time For Kids.  The students had to write down interesting facts about Lincoln each time.  Today we conferenced as a class and used our notes to write two paragraphs about Lincoln .  We'll finish up on Wednesday.  For the first time, it was a good experience.  Our next attempt will be  small groups working together to write the paragraphs.  The final attempt will be individual projects.

TOMORROW IS CRAZY HAIR/HAT DAY.
WEDNESDAY IS PAJAMA DAY.
THURSDAY IS SILLY SOCK DAY.  Mrs. Ingram wants second grade to NOT wear their silly socks to SEUSSICAL, but we'll put them on when we return to school.
FRIDAY IS FAVORITE STORYBOOK CHARACTER PARADE DAY.

Friday will also be our class reward.  We'll eat lunch in the classroom.  The kids want to bring their favorite game (NOT ELECTRONIC THIS TIME) or toy to play with the last hour of the day.

I loved the many handmade valentines!  :)

Monday, February 10, 2014

This week's spelling words:  shadows, puzzles, parents, cousins, beaches, classes, brushes, taxes, indexes, wolves, shelves, themselves, every, which

Study spelling and + facts

There are several notes in the folder.  By now you've probably heard that THERE IS NO SCHOOL TOMORROW, so please return these papers on Wednesday.

GROUP PICTURES ARE RESCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 21st.

SEUSSICAL field trip February  27th.

We've earned another class reward, but at this point I'm not sure when we'll have it!  It will be a pajama day with lunch in the classroom and either bring a favorite toy or game.  I'll let you know when.

Monday, February 3, 2014

I'm not certain how many parents are still using this blog, so would you please write a note in your child's planner telling me if you do.  Thanks so much.

There are two important notes coming home from me today.  A letter on pink paper tells you about our valentines "stuff" and our new student from Lee University.  A half sheet blue paper is a permission form concerning second grade's next field trip.  We are not able to take parents on this this, but if you would like to make a donation for another child other than your own to go, that would be fantastic!

Group pictures will be rescheduled, and I'll let you know as soon as I know!

Everyone will take the same spelling words this Friday:  guessing, laughing, chopping, petting, hugging, planning, hopping, hoping, smiling, voting, icing, writing, again, look.  PLEASE STUDY EXTRA HARD ON SPELLING WORDS because spelling grades have not been as good as they should be.

We will have a storyteller visiting our school this Friday afternoon.

Yearbooks will be on sale the month of February.  I'm sure a letter will be coming home soon.

Everyone will take the five minute + and - practice drills this week.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO GIVE YOUR CHILD PRACTICE READING AN ANALOG CLOCK AND TELLING TIME TO THE NEAREST FIVE MINUTE INTERVALS.  ALSO, PRACTICE COUNTING GROUPS OF COINS (USE REAL ONES) UP TO A $1.00 AND THEN BEYOND.

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

New spelling words:

List B (14 words):  for, four, short, before, more, roar, board, poor, pour, door, floor, your, because, our
List C (20 words):  morning, northeast, explore, ignore, door, poor, pour, court, board, fourteen, borrow, tomorrow, because, our, symmetry, congruent, trapezoid, vertex, hexagon, octagon

Tonight's homework:  STUDY SPELLING AND + FACTS; COMLETE SPELLING WORKSHEET

The spelling grades have dropped overall.  That's why I'm giving the B list only 14 words.  Some of the words this week are homophones (sound the same, but have different meanings and are not spelled the same).  You'll need to work a little harder on these.

We are learning the poem "January Starts the Year" by Risa Jordan.  Your child will have to say it to me by the end of the month.  Ask your child to say it to you.  If he/she can't, tell them to bring home their poetry notebook each night--just send it back to school each day.

We're working on + and - with regrouping, number lines, measuring length, points of view, plot, stating our opinion supported by a reason, telling time to the five minutes, word problems, and soooooo much more!

Monday, January 13, 2014
